He won three WPIAL wrestling championships and upset defending state champion George O’Korn of Canon-McMillan in the 1973 finals, 13-8.
Bill was the 1975 PIAA wrestling championship at 185 pounds after winning by disqualification over Greensburg Central Catholic’s Jamie Casale in the finals.
Shortly after winning the state title, Bertrand upset Shawn Whitcomb (88 career falls) of Grand Rapids, Michigan, 14-1, at the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic.
Bertrand compiled a 75-3-1 career scholastic record and was a Cadet champion in Burgettstown’s youth program.
In 1976 he won the Eastern Regional Olympic Trials at 198 pounds, which included a victory over 1975 NCAA champion Mike Lieberman of Lehigh.
Bertrand was also a standout scholastic all-conference fullback and linebacker, helping the Blue Devils win consecutive Black Hills Conference titles in 1973 and 1974 as well as 20 straight regular season games.
