ARTHUR SANDUSKY

Arthur (Art) Sandusky, director of Borwnson House for more than 30 years before his retirement and active for many years in youth service programs in the Washington area, will receive a meritorious service award.

Sandusky, a native of East Vandergrift who now lives in State College, is a graduate of Washington High School, where he played football and later played for a U.S. Coast Guard team and the Brownson House Bears and coached the Brownson House squad.

He played baseball and softball for McWreath Dairy, Knestrick Generals, Scott Motors, St.

Hillary, Cokeburg and a Coast Guard team and played minor league baseball for the Washington Redbirds, a St.

Louis Cardinals farm club. He played basketball for McWreath Dairy, American Legion Post 175, Standard Barbe Q, Veltri Cleaners and Brownson House.

Sandusky, while at Brownson House, started the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling program now known as the Junior Olympics and also originated junior basketball, volleyball, boxing and football programs. he also added a new playground, gym and outdoor basketball court and renovated the football field.

Sandusky, who managed Washington’s only Pony League World Series championship team in 1955, has received numerous local honors, including the County Coaches special award and recognition from such groups as the Optimist Club, Rotary Club, Jaycees, Washington County Medical Society and PA.
