EDWIN HILL

Edwin (Dutch) Hill, graduate, New York University, is arguably one of the best athletes to come out of Burgettstown. Dutch was a triple threat in football, basketball and baseball at Burgettstown from 1917 through 1921 and for Massillon High School, Massillon, OH in 1922.

The Tri-State Sports Writers acclaimed Dutch as one of the greatest scholastic players in the United States. As the 1920-1921 star fullback and team captain at Burgettstown High School, he led Burgettstown to its first championship in 1920. In basketball, he was team captain and named to the Tri-State All-Star Team in 1920.

He led his team in scoring in 1921 and was selected as the premier guard in the Tri-State area. In baseball, he was a starting pitcher and batted .517 in 1921.

At Massillon High School, he was an All-State fullback on the 1922 Ohio state championship team and named Massillon’s All-Time first-team fullback. Dutch owns seven school records. His four all-time football records include: most points one season (204); most points in one game (48); most touchdowns in one season (34); and most touchdowns in a game (8).

Dutch was one of the leading scorers in the country.

After leaving Massillon, Dutch played for Bellefonte Academy in 1924. The team led the nation in scoring with 456 points.

He enhanced his national reputation and was labeled as “Ball Carrier, Passer, and Punter Extraordinary.”

This exceptional man was a big-time collegiate triple threat in football, basketball and baseball. He was a member of the 1928 Eastern champion New York University team and was named a football All-American that same year. The New York Football Sport Writers named him one of the greatest blocking backs in the country along with being the best defensive player and punter in the East in 1928.

He was elected as New York University’s All-Time first-team fullback in 1935.
A tragic on campus accident ended Dutch’s amazing athletic career in 1929. He returned home to Burgettstown in May of 1929. Burgettstown Football Stadium was named in his honor in 1945 and rededicated as “Hill Memorial Stadium” September 13, 2002.

Dutch is survived by his brother Ralph.
