GEORGE BOUGHER, JR.

George Bougher Jr., a native of Washington, started his basketball career at the Washington YMCA under the coaching of physical director Brady Marble.

He played four years at Washington High School and was starting center on a section championship team in 1935, his senior season. He was offered a scholarship at Washington & Jefferson by head basketball coach Adam Sanders, who was seeking to revive the success of a program which had not had a winning season in six years.

In Bougher’s first year of eligibility as a sophomore, the Presidents had a 12-8 record and added 15-5 and 14-6 records. One of the losses during that period was by four points to Long Island University, then ranked as one of nation’s top teams.

Among Brougher’s teammates were former Washington High School coach Bill Laughlin; Eddie McCluskey, a legendary coach at Farrell High School and Buddy Jeannette, later a professional player and coach.
