HARRY E. GUMBERT

Harry E. Gumbert, a native of Elizabeth and resident of Wimberly, Texas, compiled a 143-113 record as a National League pitcher from 1935 through 1950.

Gumbert, grand-nephew of brothers Ad and Bill Gumbert, who pitched in the National League in the 1890s, started his professional baseball career in 1930 with Charleroi in the Middle Atlantic League. He advanced to Baltimore in the International League and was purchased by the New York Giants in 1935.

He had an 11-3 record in 1936 and added 10 wins in 1937 with the Giants winning the National League pennant. In 1938 he won 15 games, the top figure on a staff which included Hall Of Famer Carl Hubbell.

Gumber enjoyed his best season in 1939 with 18 victories and in 1941 was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals and had 11-5, 9-5 and 10-5 records as a member of two pennant-winning teams and the 1942 World Champions. He later was traded to Cincinnati where he won 10 games for the Reds as a relieverin 1948 and led the league in total appearances with 61 and saves with 17.

He concluded his major league career with the Pirates in 1950 and finished the season with Sacramento in the Pacific Coast League.

Gumbert later managed in the minor leagues before settling in the Houston, Texas area.
