JOSEPH T. LUNDY

One could summarize the gridiron achievements of Joe Lundy simply and briefly. He played high school football at California Community High School, California. PA, and collegiate football at the University of Kansas. He is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame at both institutions.

Lundy was a tackle on the undefeated California team that won the WPIAL Class A championship in 1949. He was All-Conference, All-Washington County and All-WPIAL for three years, and won All-State honors twice.

A starter at tackle for his four years at Kansas, Lundy won the school’s Ormand Beach Memorial Award after his senior year. The recipient, selected by vote of his teammates, is considered team’s player of the year and is the highest honor a Kansas player can receive. A 205-pound tackle, Lundy received honorable mention status on several All-American teams and was selected to play in the annual Blue-Grey Game in Montgomery, AL where he was a starting offensive tackle on the Blue squad.

When he first began his collegiate career, Lundy was still hampered by poor eyesight. He was able to get the vision problem corrected with contact lenses, remarking at one time, “It’s great to be able to tell something besides jersey colors.” Drafted by the Cleveland Browns, Lundy chose to continue pursuit of his mechanical engineering studies. He has since become an aeronautical power plant research engineer and has won citations for his work on Apollo, Jupiter and Saturn power plants, as well for his participation in the First Manual Lunar Landing.
