NAOMI THOMPSON KENWARD

Naomi Thompson Kenward, who started her tournament tennis career as a student at Washington Seminary, won the West Penn women’s singles title four times.

She also won singles championships in West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland and a West Virginia doubles title. In 1933, she was ranked 19th nationally and fifth in Middle States.

She was the first woman to play varsity tennis at Carnegie Tech, now Carnegie Mellon University, and was captain of the team.

She played in the U.S. National Tournament at Forest Hills, NY. when it was played on grass for the first time.

Mrs. Kenward, a Pittsburgh resident, spent two years in China with the American Red Cross during World War II.

She later won women’s golf championships at Mt.

Lebanon and Upper St. Clair Country Clubs.
