RAYMOND MURDOCK

Raymond F (Bucky) Murdock served as wrestling coach at Waynesburg College from 1947-1963. During that time his teams compiled a dual meet record of 120 wins, 21 losses and 2 ties, a winning margin of 84 percent.

A graduate of Waynesburg High School, Murdock was that school’s first state high school wrestling champion, winning in the 95 pound division. He lost only one dual meet match.

After graduation from high school, Murdock entered Waynesburg college, then World War II interrupted his college career. He served in the Air Force 1942-45 and again in 1950-52 when the Korean Conflict interrupted his coaching career. (As a collegiate wrestler, he won the 4-1 twice: in 1942 and again in 1947.)

Upon his return in 1945, he finished his education and resumed his coaching career at Waynesburg College. In his 16 years at the Waynesburg helm, he had six undefeated teams and 16 4I Conference champions. Murdock’s charges won three NCAA national individual championships and one of his wrestlers, Tony Gizoni, was name the Outstanding Wrestler in the 1949 NCAA finals. The Waynesburg College team was selected to the collegiate “Top Ten” four times in Murdock’s career.
