Athlete of Distinction – Harness Racing

Dick Stillings began his driving career at The Meadows in the 1970s after a 3 year stint in the U.S. Army, including 6 months in Vietnam as an air-supply specialist.

During his career, his annual purse winnings have exceeded $1,000,000 for 7 consecutive
years, including over $2,000,000 in 1988. In 2007, horses driven by Stillings won $1,875,637.

Dick has won virtually every major harness race in North America, including:

• The Adios at The Meadows with Barberry Spur in 1986.
• The Little Brown in Delaware, Ohio with Barberry Spur in 1986 and Jaguar Spur in 1987.
• The Breeders Crown with Esquire Spur in 1989 and Kentucky Spur in 1988.
• The Currier & Ives at The Meadows with Cheyenne Spur in 1990 and Sirocco Spur in 1992.

During his distinguished career, Dick Stillings has raced horses in The United States, Canada, Scandinavia and Europe. Through 2007, he has won purses in excess of $28,000,000 . In 1989 Dick was the co-winner of the Glen Garnsey Award as the top harness horse trainer in North America.

The late Delvin Miller, founder of The Meadows and a Hall of Fame trainer and driver himself, perhaps paid Dick Stillings the ultimate compliment. He once said, “Dickie Stillings is the best trainer driver I’ve ever seen come out of The Meadows. He is as good as anyone our sport has in developing, training and racing great harness horses.”
