STEPHEN BLYSHAK

Stephen Blyshak, considered one of the outstanding performers in the early days of scholastic wrestling in the area, won titles in the 115-pound class while competing for Canonsburg High School in WPIAL tournaments in 1936 and 1937.

Blyshak also won the championship in the 1937 WPIWA tournament which attracted schools in Western Pennsylvania including WPIAL members and teams from Clearfield, DuBois, Grove City, Erie and Punxsutawney.

Canonsburg was forced to go outside the area to find opponents in Blyshak’s era and competed against freshman college teams from Washington and Jefferson, Pitt and West Virginia University.

Blyshak lost his life in 1944 while serving in action with the U.S. Army in France.
