1931 WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

The 1931 Wash High football team may have been the best of many strong teams coached by Leroy (Hank) Day in his 14 seasons at the school.

The team’s strength probably prevented it from winning a WPIAL championship at a time when the league had only one division as Wash High had trouble scheduling games and played only seven opponents.

The team outscored it’s seven foes by an amazing 272-6 margin and gave up it’s only points to Aliquippa when the Wash High lineup was filled with substitutes.

Victims included Waynesburg 28-0; Wilkinsburg 21-0; Aliquippa 57-6; New Castle 27-0; Duquesne 40-0; Monaca 65-0; and Turtle Creek 34-0.

Despite protests by Wash High officials who argued in favor of a playoff game, Clairton, undefeated in nine games, was awarded the WPIAL title and the Little Prexies were not given an opportunity to contend for a title which many thought was well-deserved.
