ALEXANDRA “ALEX” LOOS

BENTWORTH HIGH SCHOOL

Alex was one of two girls on the Bentworth High School boys soccer team and earned a letter and was a starter as a freshman. Bentworth did not have a girls’ soccer team when she competed. Also as a freshman she came in second-place at the WPIAL Championships with the second-best time in District 7 history in the 1600-meters and placed third in that event at the PIAA Track and Field Championships. A straight-A student who was named American Legion Girl of the Year in 2003, Alex also excelled in the 400- and 800-meter events. In 2004, Alex won the 2004 WPIAL 1600-meter championship with a new WPIAL record and was the 800-meters runner-up. She was nicknamed “The Glove” in basketball because of her defensive prowess in always guarding and controlling the opposing team’s top offensive player. The young student-athlete was tragically struck and killed by a speeding car in August 2004 as she and a friend were walking home from a soccer conditioning drill at Bentworth. This past June, the 20th Annual “Sarris Candles Run for Alex” took place in Bentleyville, beginning and ending at Bentworth High School. The event consists of a 5-mile run, a 2-mile run and a 1-mile fun walk. All proceeds benefit the From Alex with Love Foundation.
