Team of Yesteryear
Andy Puchany’s 1966 Canon-McMillan wrestling team was his second undefeated team in three years with a record of 12-0. Two of his wrestlers also finished the season undefeated, Greg Trunzo in the 95 lb. weight class and John DiYenno in the heavyweight class.
The Big Macs outscored their opponents 430-135 for an average winning margin of
36-11. The team won the inaugural Western Conference Tournament with seven individual champions.
Canon-McMillan made history in the 1966 Section Three Tournament when 11 of the 13 semi-finalists were members of the Canon-Mac wrestling team. The Big Macs won the tournament before the start of the final round, a feat that no other team had ever accomplished. They had five section champions qualify for the Southwest Regional Tournament, the most from any team.
Canon-McMillan finished the year as the WPIAL runner-up, losing to Stan Dubelle’s Trinity squad by one point. Two regional champions qualified for the PIAA Tournament, Rick Trunzo in the 112 lb. weight class and Rod Patterson at the 127 lb. weight class.
