WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL AND WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

He led the WPIAL in receiving in 1967 with a school-record 52 receptions and earned All-WPIAL football honors in 1967. In the first game of his junior season against Bellaire, Ohio, three of Potts’ five receptions went for touchdowns. During his sophomore season at WVU, he helped the Mountaineers compile a 10-1 overall record, which concluded with a 14-3 victory over South Carolina in the Peach Bowl and a final national ranking of 17th. Chris led WVU in receiver as a junior with 31 receptions with three touchdowns as the team went 8-3 overall under first-year head coach Bobby Bowden. He added 22 receptions with five touchdowns his senior year, including an 89-yard touchdown catch which ranked as the second longest in the program’s history. At Washington High School in 1968, Potts was the Big School WPIAL High Hurdle champion. He also pole vaulted 12’6” that spring while being named All-WPIAL in track and field.
