A multisport scholastic standout, Bates was a four-year letter-winner in both football and wrestling and a three-year letterman in track and field. The first football junior captain at Chartiers-Houston, Bates earned first-team All-State honors in 2004 after being a second-team selection in 2003. A three-time All-Black Hills Conference pick (twice first team), Bates was named to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 and an Almanac All-Star. He received a full football scholarship to the University of Akron, where he started 27 games at guard/center and helped the Zips win the 2005 MAC championship. On the scholastic wrestling mat, Bates won the WPIAL championship in 2005 and placed second in the PIAA state tournament. He finished among the Bucs’ top 10 in career wins, and as a two-year team captain, he was a two-time section champion and 2004 WPIAL runner-up. In track and field, Elliott finished fourth in the shot put at the 2004 WPIAL championships and was a state qualifier.
