GEORGE COLEMAN

• Started his boxing career in West Virginia and Ohio at age 12

• Won the 1959 Golden Gloves Championship as a lightweight (135 lbs) while still in high school.

• Enlisted in the Army in 1961, won two titles and was undefeated in 38 fights.

• Member of the US Army team that went to the Olympic trials in 1963.

• In 1966 and 1967, George was runner-up in the AMA-AAU in Pittsburgh and won the Diamond Belt at 156 lbs.

• Rated in the top ten 156 lb boxers to represent the United States in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.

• Retired in 1968 with a record of 72-7, never being knocked out and only knocked down twice.

• Long time boxing coach at the YMCA, promoting several charity boxing shows.

• Over his career, Coleman fought for the Washington YMCA, the Mt. Oliver Police Association, the US Army, Charleroi AC and the Hill Top Association.

• Inducted into the DCAA Sports Hall of Fame in 1972 and honored by the Washington YMCA in 1973 for his boxing achievements.

• Coleman started the Canonsburg Youth Center and Boys Club and helped form the YMCA’s Boys Boxing Club in the late 1960s.

• In addition to boxing, George also participated in track, baseball and basketball.
