GEORGE MALANOSKY

BETH CENTER HIGH SCHOOL

2024 MEMORIAL COURAGE AWARD

A longtime highly motivated and respected high school basketball official, Malanosky suffered a debilitating stroke while vacationing with his family in Disney World a few months after the 2017-2018 season.

Initially confined to a wheelchair and unsure of what was going on with himself internally, Malanosky faced many emotional days, fearing he’d never regain the mechanics to continue his recreational loves of officiating, golfing and dancing.

But with the love and support of his wife, Angela, a certified occupational therapy assistant, his brother, and sons Max and Chase, George rehabbed and battled back. After starting officiating lower level games such as middle school, Malonoksy was seen regularly on the courts again in the 2021-22 season and took an even bigger step in 2022-23.

That season culminated with Malanoksy, along with colleagues Dave Jaap and Caryn McCleary, being assigned to officiate the WPIAL Class A Girls Championship Game between Union and Aquinas Academy, at Pitt’s Petersen Events Center. Clearly he was back.
