HOMER MARSHALL
A running career that began at the age of 37, Homer is Burgettstown’s first and only runner to qualify and compete in the Boston Marathon. He completed the Boston Marathon in 3 hours and 5 seconds. He improved his times the next two Boston Marathon by 48 seconds. Over the years he has competed in 25 marathons including the New York, Washington D.C. Marine Corps, Pittsburgh, Toledo and Presque Isle Marathons. Also the Olympic Trials, U.S. National AAU Men’s Championship Marathons and the Athens, Ohio Marathon.
He has many first place finishes in other distant races such as, Statue of Liberty South Park 5 mile race, Charleston West Virginia Distance Race, Sharon Ohio Mini Marathon, Canton Ohio 10,000 meter race and the Hancock County Easter Race.
His personal best times include the Boston Marathon 2 hrs. 57 minutes, Toledo, Ohio Marathon 2 hrs 57 minutes and the Pittsburgh Great Race (6.2 miles) 34 minutes 58 seconds.
Burgettstown re-named Plum Run Road to Homer Marshall Road in his honor. He was co-founder of the Burgettstown Cadet Wrestling program in 1961. He wrestled in Pittsburgh AAU and for the Washington YMCA. He served as an assistant wrestling coach at Burgettstown and Moon Twp.
Homer is a member of the Greater Pittsburgh Road Runners Club, Western Pennsylvania Track Club and the West Virginia Track Club and an active member of the Washington County Masons.
