- He was a standout three-sport athlete at Canon-McMillan High School in football, wrestling and track, earning nine letter, winning a section wrestling championship in 1973 and being named All-Conference in football in 1972-73
- Mr. Hackley was an All-American football player at Edinboro University as a receiver and was inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame for football and track and field in 1988
- He made 135 catches for 2,476 yards for the Fighting Scots and scored 18 career TDs. He held several other school receiving records upon graduation including
- 47 receptions in a single season, 190 receiving yards in a game, nine receptions in a game, among others
- Mr. Hackley was named prior to this 150th season of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference as one of the 150 most influential players/coach in the conference’s history
- He was the NAIA District 18 MVP in 1976 and was first-team All-West Division in 1973-76 and a second-team NAIA All-American
- He was named as recipient of the Sox Harrison Award as Senior Male Athlete of the Year in 1977
- Mr. Hackley held track records at Edinboro, including 100 mete4rs (10.3), 4×100 relay team (40.08), 4×400 relay team (3:15)
- He played for a handful of teams in the Canadian Football League, including for the Montreal Allouettes in the 1977 Grey Cup, the CFL championship game
- Mr. Hackley also played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Toronto Argonauts of the CFL
- He went to camp with the Cleveland Browns in 1977
