JOHN MENHART

CARMICHAELS HIGH SCHOOL AND INDIANA UNIVERSITY OF PA

A three-year starting All-County and All-Conference left halfback for Carmichaels High School from 1971-73, Menhart gained 1,100 yards with 94 points his sophomore year, including 356 yards and four TD’s in his first start, a win over Jefferson-Morgan. Despite missing the first four games his junior season with a leg injury, Menhart gained more than 700 yards. He gained 1,266 yards with 132 points his senior season while also being named to the Big 33 Check List and was honored by Pittsburgh Dapper Dan as the WPIAL Class B Most Valuable Offensive Player. From there he became a three-year offensive back starter and co-captain at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, who scored a touchdown for IUP at the tailback, fullback, and wide receiver positions, including a 63-yard scoring reception against Shippensburg. After serving as a Carmichaels assistant coach for 10 years, he served as the Mikes’ head coach from 1989-2002 and then again from 2009-2012 while also holding several teaching and administrative roles, including high school principal and the school district’s superintendent. The winningest football coach in school history, he compiled a 101-69-2 cumulative head coaching record while guiding the Mikes to four Tri County South Conference championships and a WPIAL semifinal appearance in 2002. Menhart was selected as the TCSC Coach of the Year four times and Washington-Greene WANB/Greene County Messenger Coach of the Year in 2002. He was inducted into the Tri-County Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2007, and also served as past president of that association and the conference. Menhart returned as an assistant coach for Carmichaels for three years after his second head coaching stint while serving as Superintendent. He is a past member and current member of the WPIAL Basketball and Football Steering Committees, respectively. Inducted into the Greene County Hall of Fame two years ago, John is currently the President of the Carmichaels Board of Education.
