JOSEPH PETRO
Joseph Petro, a longtime resident of Ellsworth, was noted as a sandlot baseball pitcher in Washington County leagues.
Petro, a strikeout artist, once set down eight of nine batters on strikes in an All-Star game. He also had single game performances in which he struck out 23 and 18 batters.
He displayed his durability by pitching the distance in a 21-inning game.
Petro, employed as foreman at Bethlehem Mine No.
51 until his retirement, was a member of Ellsworth Borough Council for 12 years and had also served as a school director.
He died in 1987 at the age of 69.
