ALFRED J. TIANO

Alfred J. Tiano, graduate, West Liberty State College, a standout two-way end for Trinity High School from 1938-1940. Trinity’s long-time coach, Milt Decker, described Al as “one of the best ends, offensively and defensively I have ever coached in high school.”

Al entered the military service, and after discharge, he began his college career at West Liberty State College in 1946.

While at West Liberty, he earned four letters in football and was their standout end, both on offense and defense. He also excelled on special teams, returning a kickoff 75 yards against Concord State.

Al played a significant part in West Liberty Coach Joe Bartell’s “Glory Era”. The Hilltoppers record was an impressive 32-2, including two undefeated teams in 1947 and 1948.

The Toppers had a conference record 23-game winning streak during that era. West Liberty suffered just one loss in Al’s four-year career.

He was twice selected Most Valuable Player of the Year, named to numerous opponent All-Star teams and in 1947 was named to the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph Tri-State All Class B Collegiate Team.

That team included Washington and Jefferson College greats and Hall of Famers: “Deacon” Dan Towler, Joe Rodjom and Walter Cooper.

Al’s football career ended playing in the Smokey Mountain Bowl Game in Bristol, Tenn., against North Carolina State. He later taught and coached football and track at Trinity High School.

Al and his wife, Elena, reside in Washington and are the parents of four children James, Mary Ellen, Theresa Ann and Linda and have four grandchildren.
