ARLTON GROVER

Arlton Grover was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh where he received his B.S. degree in 1931 and subsequently his M.E. degree. He coached football and baseball at East Washington High School from 1931 until 1945 and basketball until 1950.

In 15 years, his football teams compiled a win-loss-tie record of 73-38-7, including his 1935 undefeated and unscored upon team.

While he loved football, his real passion was for basketball where his teams won 215 while losing 52 and capturing eight sectional titles in a ten-year period. One newspaper report read, “When you are inclined to get into a discussion on basketball records, a good subject would be the teams produced by Arlton Grover.” It added, “Never being blessed with a bumper crop of material, Grover put together his teams by hard work and patience.”

In addition to his coaching, teaching, and administrative duties, from 1939 to 1942 Coach Grover was the business manager for the Washington Red Birds, a St. Louis Cardinal farm team. He also officiated high school football games during the late 1940s and early 1950s.

After giving up coaching and leaving East Washington, he was Supervising Principal of the Harmony Township School District for five years and of the Coudersport School District, in Potter County, for 17 years.

During these years he could frequently be found at the school basketball court or on the local golf course.
