EDWARD THOMPSON

Edward (Ed) Thompson,a Canonsburg native, began officiating basketball and football in 1942 with his basketball assignments including high school, junior high and YMCA games. During that time he teamed many times with Frank Spadaro, considered one of the top officials in the district.

Thompson, who sometimes officiated five or six games during a week early in his career, began working district college games in 1946. He continued officiating high school and college games for 26 years.

Most of Thompson’s career in officiating was spent in western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio.

He was employed for 28 years by GDC Finance Co. in Canonsburg and was vice president and manager at the time of his retirement in 1983. He is now a resident of Upper St.
