GEORGE LEWIS

2003 – WRESTLING

George W. Lewis, graduate, Waynesburg College, Farrell High School’s premier wrestler. He compiled an outstanding 65-2 career record. A four-year Letterman, he became a District 10 champion, a two-time WPIAL champion, two-time PIAA champion (1945, 1946), a Junior AMA Champion, and a two-time Senior AMA Champion.

At Waynesburg College, George was a three-time 4-I Champion, a 1948 National Champion, Outstanding Wrestling Champion Award, a 1952 Wrestling All-American and Champion of the Baltimore Wrestling Invitational.

George started the wrestling program at Hickory High School and coached there for 20 years. He was honored as District 10’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1968, 1969, 1970, and 1973. His career coaching record was 153-70-5.

In 1984, he was named the Outstanding Educator by the city of Hermitage, Pa.

For his outstanding wrestling career, George was elected to the Waynesburg College Hall of Fame, Mercer County Hall of Fame, The Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame and the Southwest Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame.

George and his wife, Kathy, reside in Hubbard, Ohio, and are parents of two children, Brad and Kristina, and have three grandchildren.
