GLENN A. FURMAN

A two way, four year starter as a running and defensive back at Mount Morris High School, he was selected to the 1959 All-Washington/Greene County conference team.

Furman began his 35 year football coaching career at Minnie Howard High School and moved to F.C. Hammond High School as Junior Varsity head coach for 8 years and compiled 59-1 record with a 38 game winning streak.

He later became an assistant coach at T.C. Williams and became T.C. Williams head coach in 1982 and coached until 1991. His overall record was 97-23-2 for a winning percentage of .798. During that time they won (7) District, (3) Regional, (2) Virginia State championships and (1) Virginia State Runner-up.

Furman’s team was undefeated in 1984 and 1987 and were ranked (3rd.) and (7th.) in the Nation by USA TODAY Newspaper. During his ten year coaching career at T.C. Williams Furmanis teams was one of the top (8) teams in Virginia competing for the State Football Title.

Furman was the 1984 Pigskin Coach of the Year, 1987 Touchdown Club of Washington D.C. “Timmie Award” emblematic of the National High School Coach of the Year. Named the 1987 Associated Press Virginia State Coach of the Year, the Alexandria Sportsman Club Coach of the Year 1978, 1984, 1987, the Washington Metro Coach of the Year 1984 and 1987 and awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award – West Virginia University, 1987.

In his 30 years of coaching he never had a losing season. Furman was an assistant to T.C. Williams head football coach Herman Boone’s 1971 team, widely considered as one of the greatest high school teams of all times. This team was featured by Walt Disney Movie, “Remember the Titans”.
