JOHN CHATMAN

An outstanding wrestler and football player at Trinity High School, John “Bimbo” Chatman went on to considerable accomplishments in both sports at the University of Pittsburgh.

As a prep wrestler, Chatman had an overall record of 74 wins and 1 loss. Unbeaten in dual meet competition, he was 25-0 overall as a 145 pound sophomore, was 24-1 as a Junior and 25-0 as a senior, wrestling at 154 pounds both seasons. He had a career record of 47 pins in 75 matches A two-time high school All-American wrestling selection, John won two PIAA titles, and three each Section, Western Conference and WPIAL titles.

John captained both the Hiller football and wrestling teams as a senior. He won the single season rushing record with the Trinity football team in 1970, when he ran for 1,469 yards in nine games. He won All-Conference and All-WPIAL honors and was nominated for the Big 33 game.

The following year he ranked as one of the top kick returners in the country, averaging 27.9 yards a carry at the University of Pittsburgh.

As a wrestler at Pitt, he won the Franklin & Marshall tournament, placed three times in the Eastern Collegiate championships and twice was an NCAA nationals qualifier.
