A high school 4 year football letterman playing quarterback, running back and defensive back and was chosen an All-Star in the Southwest Conference. He also earned letters in track, basketball and wrestling. Haught was the Senior Class President and President of the Ft. Cherry Student Council.

After high school he entered the U.S. Army (1961-1964) and after completion of his tour of duty entered the work force as a steel worker. At California University he was a 2 year starting defensive back. His 1968 team were PSAC CO-Champions and he was selected as lst.Team Coaches All¬ PSAC.

His teaching and coaching career began at Chartiers-Houston High School where he became an assistant football and wrestling coach (1969-1975) and head football coach in 1976. John’s football coaching career record is 155-134-6 a winning percentage of .535. Including in this record are 5 Conference Championships, 3 undefeated regular seasons, 20 seasons with a .500 or better average and 9 appearances in the WPIAL playoffs, (3 times in semi-finals).

Haught’s individual honors include, 2 times Washington Coach of the Year – 1979, 1982, 3 times Washington County Coach of the Year Finalist — 1998, 2001 and 2005. Selected 5 times Conference Coach of the year, 1978,’81,’86,’97 and 2000 and Eastern Association of Interscholastic Football Officials’ Coach of the Year. He was the Head Coach of the 1999 North Squad of the Tri-County Coaches Association All-Star Game and was inducted into the Tri-County Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Class of 2006.
