PETE STANTON

Peter N.(Pete)Stanton of R.D. 3, Eighty Four, was one of the pioneer sports broadcasters in Washington County and Western Pennsylvania.

He is a 1936 graduate of East Washington High School, where he played basketball and football under the late coach Arlton Grover. He started his radio career in 1941 at WJPA and spent two years at WJAS and KQV, returning in 1945 to WJPA as sports director.

Stanton was the first to broadcast the entire PIAA wrestling tournament and covered many other high school sports events including regular season and playoffs. He also broadcast the Pony League World Series for many years in addition to regular season games in Washington youth baseball leagues.

He covered Washington & Jefferson College football and basketball at home and on the road for a number of years and was a team manager in the early years of the Washington Pony League.

Among awards received by Stanton are the W&J Distinguished Service Award, 1964; Washington High School Booster Club award, 1975; Washington Knights of Columbus special award, 1982; Joe E. Brown Fellowship award of Pony Baseball Inc., 1983-1986; Washington Youth Baseball Award, 1983 and Stanley Shook Memorial Award, 1984, for contributions to Brownson House youth sports programs.
