THOMAS E. ELLWOOD

Thomas E. (Pop) Ellwood, a Washington native, was a 1913 graduate of Washington High School and was captain of the football team in his senior year.

He played guard for Penn State University in the 1923 Rose Bowl game and after graduation in 1924, coached football at Centerville High School, Redstone Township in Fayette County, Trinity High School, Chartiers Township and Mapletown. He played professional football with the Brownsville Independents.

Ellwood started Trinity’s wrestling program in 1931 and also coached wrestling at Chartiers Township and Washington & Jefferson College, where he served as freshman football coach. He also wrestled as a heavyweight for a team representing the Washington YMCA.

Ellwood, a science and mathematics teacher in the high schools where he coached, lived for many years on a farm at Washington R.D. 6. His 1945 football team at Chartiers Township (now Chartiers-Houston ) won the WPIAL Class B title with an upset victory in the championship game at Brownsville over undefeated and heavily-favored Masontown.
