VICKI L. STATON

Vicki Staton built the women’s athletic program at Washington and Jefferson College, as coach of the women’s basketball and volleyball programs from 1975 through last year. A West Virginia University graduate in 1970, Staton was the head basketball coach at Waynesburg High School from 1971-75, compiling a 56-16 won-loss record that included a pair of section titles.

After moving to W & J in 1975, she finished her work for her masters degree at WVU in 1976. She continues to coach the volleyball team, but turned over the basketball job last year to one of her former players and assistant coach, Carrie Zickefoose, a Burgettstown High and W & J graduate. In her 25 year career as basketball coach at Jay, Staton teams won 279 games while losing 227. In the same span, her volleyball teams turned in 348 victories and lost 344. Her combined 627-521 record makes her the winningest coach in W & J history.

Staton coached basketball teams won the Pennwood West Conference championship seven years, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship twice and the ECAC South Division III championship in 1994. Her 1995 and 1998 teams played in the NCAA basketball tournament.

The Presidents volleyball teams won the Presidents’ Athletic Conference title five times and the ECAC South Division III championship in 1997 and 1998.
The first woman to win the Knights of Columbus Washington-Greene County Coach of the Year title, for basketball in 1980, she was tabbed Presidents’ Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in volleyball five times.

Currently, Staton chairs the Physical Education Department at W&J, continues to be the head women’s volleyball coach, is a Professor of Physical Education and is the senior woman administrator in the athletic department.
