WILLIAM L. McGLUMPHY

William L. McGlumphy of Washington was raised in the Tylerdale area of the city and played YMCA Junior League and Church League baseball. He also played for Tygart Valley Glass in the Industrial League in 1934. He played four years of football at Washington High School where he graduated in 1934.

McGlumphy played four years of football at Waynesburg College, where he graduated in 1938, with the Yellow Jackets meeting such major rivals as Pitt, West Virginia, Duquesne and Fordham University.

He was named to Fordham’s All-Opponent team in 1936. He also lettered in track and participated in wrestling at Waynesburg.

McGlumphy played semipro football in 1938 and 1939 with Menzies of McKeesport and faced teams such as the Warren Redbirds, Akron Aawnings, Minerva Merchants and St. Rosalia Prep. Menzies also played exhibition games against the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1938 and the first team known as the Steelers in 1939.

McGlumphy returned to Wash High as a teacher in 1939 and served as backfield coach under Bill Amos before entering military service from 1942 until 1946. He assisted head coaches Hank Day and Emil Dupke after returning and was baseball coach from 1946 through 1953 with Wash High winning two section titles and advancing to the WPIAL semifinals in 1952.
